X Introduces Changes to Verification and Premium Features
X, formerly known as Twitter, has implemented significant changes to its verification and premium features, aiming to cater to its most “influential” users.
Under the new policy, users with more than 2,500 verified followers, who are already subscribed to X Premium, are granted premium features at no additional cost. These features include the coveted blue tick verification badge and a reduction in the number of advertisements displayed on the platform.
In addition to the blue tick, premium users will experience enhanced visibility, with their tweets ranked higher when engaging with other users. They also gain the ability to apply for revenue sharing from adverts displayed on the site.
Furthermore, individuals with over 5,000 verified followers are granted access to Premium+, which offers even more benefits such as the removal of almost all advertisements and further enhancements to tweet visibility when engaging with others.
This change in policy follows an announcement by Elon Musk, the owner of X, in late March.
Background on Blue Ticks
Originally, the blue tick verification badge served as a means of authenticating users and distinguishing them as legitimate accounts. However, it transitioned into a paid feature after Mr. Musk’s acquisition of the platform.
Prior to the acquisition, the blue tick was awarded for free by the platform and was associated with authenticity, reserved for individuals such as celebrities, government officials, and journalists.
Mr. Musk sought to overhaul this system, as he believed it created a divide between users. Consequently, the blue tick became a symbol of subscription to X Premium, with verification tied to payment.
Now, the blue tick represents a fusion of both systems, signifying prominence based on the number of followers with their own verification badges.
These changes reflect X’s efforts to adapt its platform to the evolving landscape of social media and user expectations.
