iPhone 17 or Wait for iPhone 18? UK Buying Guide

Thinking about buying an iPhone 17?

You might want to keep your wallet closed for just a little longer.

Apple is holding its next special event on 9 September, and with new iPhones widely expected, buying a new iPhone the day before Apple's announcement probably isn't the best timing.

There is, however, a bit of a twist this year.

The standard iPhone 18 might not arrive as soon as you would normally expect.

    The quick answer

If you need an iPhone right now: the iPhone 17 is still an excellent choice, but wait until after Apple's event before buying.

If you're interested in the next Pro models: definitely wait and see what Apple announces.

If you're waiting specifically for the standard iPhone 18: you could potentially be waiting until 2027 if current rumours prove accurate.

Why I'd wait before buying an iPhone 17

This isn't really about the iPhone 17 being a bad phone.

    It's about timing.

Apple's September event is now only a day away. Once it's finished, we'll have a much better idea of what Apple's next iPhone range looks like.

Retailers and mobile phone operators may also start adjusting their offers once new models are revealed.

So even if you ultimately decide the iPhone 17 is the phone you want, waiting another day gives you more information before spending your money.

The iPhone 17 is still a seriously good phone

The regular iPhone 17 was one of Apple's more meaningful standard iPhone upgrades.

It comes with a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display, ProMotion with refresh rates up to 120Hz, Always-On display support and Apple's A19 chip.

You also get a 48MP Fusion camera system and the newer 18MP Center Stage front camera.

Storage starts at a much more useful 256GB.

Apple launched the 256GB model in the UK at £799.

Worth knowing: Buying last year's iPhone doesn't suddenly mean you're buying an old phone. The iPhone 17 remains part of Apple's current range and should have years of software updates ahead of it.

So what's happening with the iPhone 18?

This is where things become a little less straightforward.

Apple hasn't officially announced the iPhone 18 range yet.

However, reports suggest Apple could change the familiar September release cycle we've become used to.

The rumoured iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be part of Apple's next wave of premium devices.

The standard iPhone 18, however, has been rumoured for a later release — potentially in spring 2027.

Rumour check: A 2027 release for the standard iPhone 18 has not been confirmed by Apple. Until Apple announces the device and its release date, this should be treated as speculation.

    Buy now or wait?

👍 Consider the iPhone 17 if...

Your current phone genuinely needs replacing.

You're upgrading from an older iPhone such as an iPhone 13 or earlier.

You don't need the latest Pro features.

You'd rather have a proven phone than wait months for an unannounced model.

    ⏳ Wait if...

Your current iPhone is still working perfectly well.

You're considering an iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max.

You want to see Apple's full September announcements first.

You're happy keeping your existing phone until 2027 if necessary.

What if you've already got an iPhone 16 or 17?

There's probably even less reason to rush.

Modern iPhones are designed to last for years, and upgrading every generation doesn't always transform the everyday experience.

If your battery is healthy, your camera does what you need and your phone still feels fast, keeping it for another year could make far more sense.

Sometimes the best-value upgrade is simply not upgrading at all.

    What about older iPhones?

The decision becomes more interesting if you're using an older model.

Someone moving from an iPhone 11, 12 or 13 is likely to notice considerably more improvements than someone moving from last year's phone.

You could see benefits including a better display, newer cameras, faster performance and improved battery efficiency.

In that situation, waiting months purely because another iPhone is eventually coming might not be worthwhile.

    Don't forget the price

A new iPhone is a big purchase.

The iPhone 17 started at £799 for 256GB, so it's worth comparing the total cost rather than simply looking at an attractive monthly payment.

This is particularly important with longer mobile phone contracts.

Look at what you'll pay over the entire agreement, what data is included and whether you're paying extra for an allowance you'll never actually use.

📱 How much phone storage do you actually need?

Before paying extra for a larger iPhone, work out whether you'll genuinely use the additional space.

Our Phone Storage Calculator can help you estimate how much storage is suitable based on the way you use your phone.

    📶 Buying your iPhone SIM-free?

If you're buying the phone outright and choosing a SIM-only plan, don't automatically pay for the biggest data allowance.

Use our Mobile Data Calculator to estimate how much mobile data you actually need.

Could the iPhone 17 become cheaper?

Possibly — although there's no guarantee.

Apple may change its line-up after introducing new products, while other retailers and mobile phone operators could introduce new promotions.

That's another reason why waiting until after the event makes sense.

You aren't committing yourself to buying Apple's newest phone.

You're simply giving yourself the chance to compare all the options.

So, should you buy an iPhone 17 or wait?

I'd wait — but only until we see what Apple announces.

If the iPhone 17 still looks like the right phone afterwards, there's absolutely nothing wrong with buying one.

It remains a powerful, modern iPhone with plenty of life ahead of it.

But if you're hoping for Apple's next Pro iPhone, buying immediately before the event makes very little sense.

And if you're waiting for the standard iPhone 18, be prepared for the possibility that your wait could be considerably longer than usual.

    The Tech Blog UK view

    There's always another phone coming.

If you constantly wait for the next model, you'll never actually buy anything.

But when an Apple event is literally a day away, waiting just makes sense.

See what Apple announces, compare the prices and then decide which phone genuinely works best for you.
