When Does the iPhone 18 Come Out? Here’s What We Know So Far
If you’re waiting for the iPhone 18, you might be expecting Apple to launch the entire range this September.
This year, things could be a little different.
Apple has confirmed that its next special event will take place on Wednesday, 9 September 2026 at 6pm UK time, but it has not officially confirmed which new iPhones will appear.
And according to the latest reports, the standard iPhone 18 might not actually arrive until 2027.
Here’s what we know so far.
When is the iPhone 18 coming out?
At the moment, the expected iPhone 18 release schedule looks like this:
iPhone 18 Pro — September 2026
iPhone 18 Pro Max — September 2026
Apple’s rumoured foldable iPhone — September 2026
iPhone 18 — Spring 2027
iPhone 18e — Spring 2027
iPhone Air 2 — Spring 2027
That would be a significant change from Apple’s usual approach.
Normally, the standard and Pro versions of the latest iPhone arrive together in September. This time, Apple is widely reported to be splitting its launches into two parts.
Apple has confirmed an event for 9 September
One thing we do know for certain is that Apple is holding a special event on 9 September 2026.
The event, titled “Surprise and shine”, starts at 6pm in the UK.
Apple hasn’t officially said that the iPhone 18 will be announced there, so it’s important not to treat any individual model as confirmed just yet.
However, reports strongly suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be among the headline products.
Apple is also widely expected to reveal its first foldable iPhone.
What about the normal iPhone 18?
This is where things get interesting.
Multiple reports suggest that there will be no standard iPhone 18 launch in September 2026.
Instead, Apple is expected to hold the regular model back until spring 2027, potentially around March.
If that happens, it would mean anyone wanting Apple’s newest iPhone this autumn may have to choose one of the more expensive Pro models — or continue with the current iPhone 17.
It would also mark a noticeable break from Apple’s long-running September iPhone release pattern.
Why would Apple delay the iPhone 18?
There hasn’t been an official explanation because Apple hasn’t confirmed the new release strategy.
However, reports suggest that Apple wants to divide its increasingly large iPhone range across the year.
Instead of trying to launch everything at once, the company could use autumn for its premium devices and spring for its more mainstream models.
The expected pattern would therefore become something like:
Autumn: Pro, Pro Max and foldable iPhone
Spring: Standard iPhone, iPhone e and iPhone Air
There may be a practical manufacturing benefit too, with Apple’s supply chain having fewer new models to produce simultaneously.
Comments reportedly made by Apple suppliers have also added weight to claims that one of Apple’s smartphone launches has shifted into the first quarter of 2027.
When could the iPhone 18 Pro go on sale?
We don’t have an official release date yet.
If Apple announces the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max during its 9 September event, we’d expect pre-orders and the full release to follow fairly quickly afterwards based on Apple’s previous launches.
For comparison, Apple announced the iPhone 17 on 9 September 2025, opened pre-orders on 12 September, and released the new range shortly afterwards.

What will be new with the iPhone 18?
Nothing is official yet, but plenty of rumours are circulating.
The iPhone 18 Pro models have been linked with Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro processor, reportedly manufactured using a new 2nm process.
Other reported upgrades include:
A smaller Dynamic Island
Camera improvements
Better battery efficiency
Apple’s next-generation modem
Possible variable-aperture camera technology
New colour options
The standard iPhone 18 is also expected to receive Apple’s A20 processor when it eventually launches.
As always with pre-release Apple rumours, features can change before launch and some reports will inevitably turn out to be wrong.
What about the foldable iPhone?
Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone could finally make an appearance this year.
Current reports suggest it may launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max rather than being part of the standard iPhone range.
Exactly what Apple will call it is still unclear, although names including iPhone Fold and iPhone Ultra have been suggested.
Until Apple puts a name on the stage, we’d treat both as placeholders rather than confirmed branding.
Should you wait for the iPhone 18?
That depends on which model you’re interested in.
If you’re looking for an iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max, it makes sense to wait until Apple’s September event before making a decision. We’re now extremely close to finding out what Apple has planned.
If you specifically want the standard iPhone 18, however, you could have a considerably longer wait.
Current reports point towards spring 2027, rather than September 2026.
Anyone considering an iPhone 17 should therefore keep in mind that its direct replacement may still be several months away.
