In an email to staff, Universal’s CEO Sir Lucian Grainge stated that TikTok had agreed to “key changes,” with artist and songwriter compensation set to increase compared to the previous deal.
The restoration of Universal’s music to TikTok, including audio for previously muted videos, is expected to be completed in less than two weeks. Taylor Swift, one of the label’s prominent artists, had already reached a separate agreement to return her music to the platform.
“Music is an integral part of the TikTok ecosystem, and we are pleased to have found a path forward with Universal Music Group,” said TikTok head Shou Zi Chew.
Addressing AI Concerns
Drake and The Weeknd are among the artists returning to the platform following a previous dispute over artificial intelligence (AI). The companies have introduced “industry-leading protections” around AI usage to safeguard human artistry.
The deal includes commitments to remove unauthorized AI-generated music from TikTok and improve artist and songwriter attribution. This addresses concerns raised by artists about the misuse of AI to generate music without consent.
TikTok and Universal pledge to develop AI tools responsibly, ensuring they foster musical creativity while protecting human creativity.
Conclusion
The settlement between TikTok and Universal Music Group marks a significant step forward in ensuring fair compensation for artists and addressing concerns over AI-generated content. However, ongoing collaboration and vigilance will be necessary to uphold the integrity of musical creativity in the digital age.
