Instagram Revamps Recommendations Algorithm Amid TikTok Uncertainty
Instagram is overhauling its recommendations algorithms in what analysts say is an attempt to capitalize on TikTok’s uncertainties. Changes to its content suggestion system, particularly on Reels, will prioritize original content and aim to give all creators an equal chance of visibility.
The Meta-owned platform is seeking to emulate the success of TikTok, especially as the potential ban of the latter in the US looms. However, some in the creator community express skepticism, suggesting the changes may be too late for users who have grown frustrated with Instagram’s handling of its Reels feature.
In a blog post, Instagram acknowledged the need to “correct” its previous approach, which favored accounts with larger followings and content aggregators. The upcoming changes will roll out gradually over the next few months.
Jasmine Enberg, principal social media analyst at eMarketer, emphasized Instagram’s aim to compete for TikTok creators. She noted that TikTok’s algorithm, which promotes viral content regardless of creator size, has made it a preferred platform for emerging creators.
However, Meta’s track record of platform and algorithmic changes raises doubts about the effectiveness of the overhaul. Some smaller creators feel disenfranchised by Instagram’s previous algorithms and are skeptical about the upcoming changes.
Under the new system, “aggregator” accounts that frequently repost content without attribution will be marginalized in recommendations. Instagram will also prioritize original creators by replacing duplicates with the original content and providing labels attributing original creators on reposted content.
“It takes a lot of time and effort to create original content, so those who create it should get credit and distribution even when it is reposted by other accounts,” Instagram stated.
