UK Watchdog Bans Coinbase Ad Campaign
The UKโs advertising regulator has banned a series of adverts from cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, ruling that they implied crypto could help ease cost of living pressures.
The decision follows complaints from members of the public who said the adverts were irresponsible and downplayed the risks associated with cryptocurrency investments.
Why the Ads Were Banned
The adverts appeared in August and included posters and a video that showed the UK in various states of decline.
Scenes included run-down homes, struggling high streets, and supermarkets highlighting rising prices. These visuals were paired with a satirical message suggesting that if everything was fine, nothing needed to change.
The Advertising Standards Authority ruled that this approach risked encouraging people to make financial decisions by presenting crypto as a potential solution to wider economic problems.
Concerns Over Crypto Risks
The regulator said the adverts trivialised the risks of cryptocurrency, which remains largely unregulated in the UK.
It found that by highlighting issues such as the cost of living and housing, the campaign implied consumers should consider changing their finances, with Coinbase positioned as part of the answer.
A total of 35 complaints were upheld.
Coinbase Responds
Coinbase said it disagreed with the ruling.
The company stated that the campaign was designed to reflect widely reported economic conditions and spark discussion, not to offer simple solutions or reduce awareness of risk.
Coinbase added that while digital assets are not a cure-all, it believes they can play a positive role in a more open and efficient financial system when adopted responsibly.
Regulators Remain Cautious on Crypto
This is not the first time UK regulators have taken action against crypto advertising.
The advertising watchdog has repeatedly warned that promotions must clearly explain the risks involved, including the possibility of losing all invested money.
Crypto adverts are expected to make clear when products are not regulated and that consumers may have no protection if things go wrong.
