Is Apple’s latest security feature causing any problems?

Apple’s New ‘Stolen Device Protection’ Feature: What You Need to Know

Hello Techie,

Are you looking to recycle your Apple iPhone anytime soon, or considering using a service like O2 Switch Up on O2? If so, you need to know about this feature.

Since the update to iOS 17.3, Apple has introduced a new feature called ‘Stolen Device Protection.’ This feature adds another layer of security to your iPhone in the event that it is stolen and someone knows your passcode. It prevents the removal of Find My iPhone for at least an hour as seen in the screen shot below:-

What does this mean for the user?

If your phone is stolen and someone knows your passcode, you’ll be able to track it for up to an hour. However, if someone doesn’t know your passcode, you can track and block your phone indefinitely.

While this is a great security feature, some users have provided feedback that they were unaware of its existence and didn’t activate it.

How to check or switch this service on or off:

  1. Go to Settings on your phone.
  2. Scroll down to Face ID & Passcode.
  3. Enter your security details.
  4. Scroll down to Stolen Device Protection.
  5. Toggle the switch to turn it On or Off.

If you’re away from a trusted location, such as home or work, it will delay you from turning the feature off.

Why is this a pain?

If you intend to recycle or hand your device over to a network provider, you’ll have to wait an hour before proceeding.

Apple prioritizes protecting its customers, but this new feature is something to keep an eye on.
