Three UK & Ericsson to Build Europe’s Largest Mobile Packet Core! 📡🚀

Three UK is taking mobile connectivity to the next level by partnering with Ericsson to build Europe’s largest cloud-native core network! 🌍📶 This cutting-edge upgrade will more than triple its core capacity, ensuring even smoother streaming, gaming, and mobile browsing for customers.

    What’s Changing? 📈

    • Three UK’s core network capacity will increase to 9 terabits per second (Tbps), up from 2Tbps in December 2024.
    • Massive data demand is driven by Premier League streaming on Amazon Prime, gaming updates, and home broadband.
    • Three UK users are leading the way in data usage, averaging 31.5GB per month – 2.4x the UK national average!

    Why Ericsson? 🤝

The new core network will use Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core solution, along with the latest cloud-native infrastructure, improving Three’s ability to handle high-demand services.

    Key benefits include:

    • 🚀 Scalable capacity to support future data needs
    • ⚡ Lower latency for a better user experience
    • 📊 Better network insights to manage demand efficiently
    • 🛠️ In-service software upgrades without disrupting traffic
    • 🌍 More eco-friendly technology for sustainable performance

When Will It Be Ready? ⏳

Installation of the new infrastructure is already underway in Three UK’s data centres and will be partially operational by the end of 2025. A careful migration of all traffic will take place over the next few years.

    What The Experts Say 🎙️

Iain Milligan, Chief Network Officer at Three UK: “The last few years have seen a tsunami of data growth. Our new core network with Ericsson ensures we can support our customers’ data usage over the long term.”

Katherine Ainley, CEO of Ericsson UK & Ireland: “We are proud to support Three UK in this next stage of their network transformation. This project is a significant milestone, ensuring that Three’s customers enjoy the best mobile experience.”

    In Simple Terms

Three UK is upgrading its network with Ericsson to support growing data demands. This means faster speeds, better reliability, and an overall improved mobile experience. The new system will be partially online by the end of the year, with a full rollout over the next few years. 🚀
