Virgin Media O2 Teams Up with Charity to Donate 500 Used Devices to Those in Need
Virgin Media O2 and Hubbub Donate Used Devices to People in Need
Virgin Media O2 and environmental charity Hubbub are collaborating to provide over 500 used tablets and smartphones to individuals in need. The initiative is funded by a £400,000 device lending scheme established by the Tech Lending Community Scheme in 2022.
The goal of the scheme is to offer used devices to those in need while also giving technology a second life, thus reducing landfill waste.
In this round of funding, homelessness charities Centrepoint and Thames Reach will receive over 500 tablets and smartphones, connected with free O2 mobile data from the National Databank, a collaboration between Virgin Media O2 and the charity Good Things Foundation.
Refuge, a charity supporting victims of domestic abuse, will also receive continued funding and support for their device lending scheme. Reconome, a company specializing in refurbishing second-hand devices, provides additional support to the project.
Virgin Media O2’s sustainability strategy, called the Better Connections Plan, aims to connect a million deprived individuals through free and affordable services by the end of 2025.
Virgin Media’s chief sustainability officer, Dana Haidan, emphasized the importance of initiatives like The Tech Lending Community Scheme and the National Databank in addressing digital exclusion and data poverty, transforming lives in communities across the UK.
