TikTok Set to Compete Against Instagram with New Photo App
TikTok to Launch Photo-Sharing App, Taking on Instagram
TikTok has announced plans to enter the photo-sharing market with the launch of a new app, directly challenging social media rival Instagram.
The company revealed that it is working on a “dedicated space” for images and text, signaling its intention to expand beyond short-form videos.
Some users have already received notifications stating that their photo posts will be shared to a new app called “TikTok Notes” unless they opt out.
This move follows a trend of social media platforms imitating each other’s features, with Instagram introducing Reels, a TikTok-like video tool, in 2020.
According to Mike Proulx, a research director at analysis firm Forrester, successful implementation of copycat features can pay off, citing Instagram’s adoption of Snapchat’s “Stories” feature.
However, the success of such endeavors is not guaranteed, as seen in Twitter’s failed attempt to replicate Snapchat’s functionality.
Instagram’s recent focus on promoting Reels has drawn criticism from some users, including celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, who voiced concerns over changes to the platform’s interface.
TikTok has not finalized the design or release date of the Notes app, but screenshots of notifications suggest that it will allow users to upload or share photo posts.
Social media consultant Matt Navarra believes that a text or photo app could attract TikTok users who primarily consume content rather than create it.
However, he notes that there may not be significant demand for another photo-sharing app, as there are already plenty of options available.
Launching Notes as a separate app would represent a departure from TikTok’s previous strategy of incorporating new features directly into the core app.
Jasmine Enberg, principal social media analyst at Insider Intelligence, suggests that entering the photo-sharing space makes sense for TikTok, given its dominance in other areas.
Mike Proulx advises TikTok to focus on creating a compelling user experience to differentiate TikTok Notes from existing platforms.
As social media features become increasingly ubiquitous, the key to success lies in community, user experience, and algorithms.
