TikTok Goes Dark in the US – What Happens Next?

The unthinkable has happened—TikTok has officially been banned in the United States! Overnight, millions of users woke up to find their favorite app completely inaccessible. But what led to this dramatic shutdown, and could it happen elsewhere, like the UK? Let’s break it all down.

🚨 Why Did TikTok Get Banned?

The US government has long been concerned about TikTok’s links to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. Lawmakers argued that the app posed a national security risk, claiming that user data could be accessed by the Chinese government.

To avoid a ban, ByteDance was given until January 19 to sell TikTok to a US-approved buyer. That didn’t happen, and now, the app is officially unavailable in the US.

🇺🇸 Will Trump Save TikTok?

President-elect Donald Trump has hinted at a potential 90-day extension for TikTok. Speaking to NBC News, he said he would “most likely” give the app a temporary reprieve once he takes office.

“If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday,” Trump stated.

For now, the platform remains offline in the US, having been removed from Apple and Google’s app stores. Even TikTok.com is showing no videos.

💰 How Are Creators Reacting?

The shutdown has left millions of content creators in limbo. Many influencers rely on TikTok as their primary source of income, and the loss of the platform could be devastating.

Nicole Bloomgarden, a popular creator, told the BBC that the ban could cut her earnings significantly.

Another influencer, Erika Thompson, said, “The biggest loss is the educational content. There’s so much valuable information on TikTok, and now it’s just gone.”

🇬🇧 Could the UK Ban TikTok Too?

For now, the UK has no plans to ban TikTok. Speaking to the BBC, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones confirmed that the government would not follow the US unless a major security threat emerged.

“We won’t be following the same path as the Americans… For consumers who want to post videos of their cats dancing, that doesn’t seem like a security threat to me,” he joked.

That being said, TikTok has already been banned from UK Parliament and government devices since 2023. So, while a full-scale ban is unlikely, the app will remain under scrutiny.

🔮 What’s Next for TikTok?

The big question now is whether ByteDance will sell TikTok or find another way to work with the US government. If Trump follows through with the 90-day extension, it could buy TikTok some time to negotiate a deal.

But if no agreement is reached, TikTok could face a permanent US ban.

🧠 In Simple Terms

The US has officially banned TikTok because of concerns about its links to China. ByteDance had a deadline to sell the app but didn’t, so now it’s offline in the US.

However, President-elect Donald Trump might delay the ban for 90 days when he takes office.

Meanwhile, UK officials say they won’t ban TikTok unless a real security threat appears.

So, if you’re in the UK, you can keep scrolling… for now! 😉
