Google Unveils New In-Built Diagnostic Tool and Maintenance Guides for Pixel Smartphones

Google

Google has introduced a diagnostic tool for Pixel phone users, enabling them to assess their device’s functionality. By dialing ##7287## on their phone’s keypad, users can access this application to evaluate the performance of their Pixel phone, ensuring it operates correctly, especially following repairs.

The app offers a variety of diagnostic tools for Pixel phone users. They have the option to conduct a comprehensive diagnostic check, which scans the entire device for any issues. Additionally, there are specific tests available to identify physical defects and problems related to the phone’s display, sensors, and connectivity features. This new tool is accessible on all Pixel phones and supports the English language.

Google is not only launching the diagnostics app but also rolling out revamped repair manuals. These manuals, designed to be user-friendly for both professional technicians and do-it-yourself enthusiasts, are downloadable from Google’s website in English and French. Currently, they are available for the Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro, with plans to expand this offering to include manuals for both earlier and future models in the upcoming months.

Additionally, Google recently introduced a new Repair Mode feature for Pixel Phones. This mode can be activated by users when their device is being serviced, safeguarding their private data while the phone is handled by a technician. This feature is similar to Samsung’s Repair Mode, which was introduced in 2021, and aims to provide enhanced privacy protection during device repairs.

Tech giants like Google and Samsung are increasingly embracing the concept of DIY enthusiasts and independent repair shops undertaking their own device repairs. Both companies have partnered with iFixit to supply repair parts for a variety of their devices. Similarly, Apple has been progressively broadening its self-repair service since its inception last year, demonstrating a shift towards supporting user-led device maintenance. Recently, Apple also launched an online diagnostics tool, further facilitating users in self-assessing and repairing their devices. This trend reflects a growing movement in the tech industry towards more user-friendly repair policies and resources.
