The Wallet app on your iPhone has been capable of displaying Apple Pay transactions made with your bank and credit cards for some time. However, if you’re a user of the Wallet app in the United Kingdom, the newly integrated feature in iOS 17.1 allows you to access more comprehensive account information. This includes your current account balance from your bank, a history of deposits and payments, and, if you have a credit card, details on your remaining credit.
To access this additional account information, your bank must support Apple’s implementation of the Open Banking API. Currently, supporting banks comprise Barclays, Monzo, Startling, HSBC, Lloyds, and RBS, and it’s likely that more banks will join this list when iOS 17.1 is made available to the public.
The following steps outline the secure authorization process for integration through the Wallet app. It’s a straightforward procedure, and Apple will automatically redirect you to your bank’s app to complete the authentication. Keep in mind that, until iOS 17.1 is officially released, you’ll need to have the iOS 17.1 developer beta installed on your iPhone for this to function.
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap a card from a supporting bank.
- Tap Get Started under “See Balances and Full Transaction History for This Account.”
- Tap Continue to connect your account to Wallet.
- Check the account details that you are about to give Wallet permission to access, then tap Continue.
- In your bank app, enter your iPhone’s passcode or use Face ID to grant Wallet permission to access the specified account details.
After completing these steps, you’ll be redirected to the Wallet app, where you’ll find your account’s available balance displayed beneath the bank card, along with your transaction history. If it’s a credit card, you’ll also see the remaining available balance, and a tap on the balance will reveal your credit limit.
Additionally, Apple Wallet retains annual transaction histories for linked accounts. You can access these records for each account by navigating to Settings -> Wallet & Apple Pay: Select the connected account under “Connections,” choose the card under “Accounts,” and then tap on “Account Activity,” where you can view transactions sorted by year.
While Apple users in the UK still don’t have access to Apple Cash or Apple Card, it’s a welcome development to see Apple exclusively supporting a British banking standard within its Wallet app. It’s important to note that Open Banking is specific to the UK, and there is currently no equivalent system in the US.
