Three Faces Backlash as 999 Calls Fail During Outage
Mobile network provider Three is under fire after admitting that some 999 calls failed to connect during a major service outage on Thursday. The disruption left thousands of customers unable to make or receive calls, sparking concerns over emergency accessibility.
999 Calls Failed During the Outage
Three has acknowledged receiving reports that a small number of customers were unable to connect to 999 services. While the company claims that only around ten people were affected, many users took to social media to report more widespread issues.
A spokesperson for Three said: “A normal volume of 999 calls were connected yesterday, and our monitoring confirms the service is working fully this morning. We apologise sincerely for the inconvenience caused.”
Widespread Network Issues
More than ten thousand people reported problems with Three on Downdetector, a platform that tracks service outages. Customers using smaller networks like Smarty and ID Mobile, which rely on Three’s infrastructure, also experienced disruptions.
Storm Éowyn Adds to the Chaos
As if the outage wasn’t bad enough, Three has also been battling network issues caused by Storm Éowyn. The storm has led to localised disruptions, with the company deploying extra engineering resources to restore services as quickly as possible.
A Three spokesperson said: “Following an issue affecting voice calls yesterday, our services are now fully back to normal, apart from some localised issues related to Storm Éowyn. We are very sorry for any inconvenience it caused to our customers.”
Will Customers Get Compensation?
Many frustrated customers are now questioning whether they will receive compensation for the disruption. Ofcom, the UK’s telecoms regulator, has said it is in contact with Three to assess the scale of the outage.
According to Ofcom’s guidelines, providers may be expected to offer refunds while services are being repaired. However, Three has yet to confirm whether compensation will be offered.
Frustration Grows as Users Threaten to Switch Networks
Three customers took to social media to share their frustration, with some claiming they missed important calls and appointments due to the outage. Others have said they plan to switch to a different provider, with one user commenting: “This was the final straw—I’m done with Three!”
Despite the backlash, Three insists that services are now operating normally and that they are continuing to investigate the reported 999 call failures.
The Vodafone Merger and Other Disruptions
This incident comes just weeks after the UK approved Three’s £16.5 billion merger with Vodafone. Interestingly, the outage on Thursday coincided with a major disruption affecting AI tool ChatGPT, though the two incidents appear to be unrelated.
In Simple Terms
Three, one of the UK’s biggest mobile networks, suffered a major outage on Thursday, leaving thousands of customers unable to make calls. Some people even reported that their 999 emergency calls didn’t go through, which is a serious concern. While Three insists only a handful of customers were affected, many users have taken to social media to complain. The network says the issue is now fixed, but some customers are still experiencing problems due to Storm Éowyn. Ofcom is investigating, and it remains unclear whether affected users will get compensation.
