Fortnite Returns to iPhones in Europe: What You Need to Know
Exciting news for Fortnite fans in Europe! After a four-year hiatus, the popular game is finally available on iPhones again. However, this return is exclusive to European Union (EU) players, thanks to new legislation that requires Apple to allow alternative app stores on its devices.
Why Is Fortnite Only Available in the EU?
Fortnite’s comeback to iPhones is tied to the EU’s Digital Markets Act. This new law, introduced in March, forces Apple to permit third-party app stores on its devices. Unfortunately, for Fortnite fans outside of the EU, this means the game is still unavailable on iPhones in other regions, as similar laws don’t exist elsewhere.
The game was originally removed from Apple’s App Store back in 2020 due to a dispute between Apple and Fortnite’s creator, Epic Games. The conflict stemmed from Epic’s refusal to pay Apple’s commission fees for in-app purchases. Since then, iPhone users have been unable to download Fortnite through the traditional App Store.
How to Get Fortnite on Your iPhone
To play Fortnite on an iPhone in Europe, users will need to install an alternative app store, as it’s no longer available on Apple’s official App Store. One such option is the newly-launched Epic Games Store, which is also making its debut on Google Android devices.
While this might sound simple, Epic Games acknowledges that the installation process isn’t exactly straightforward. They claim that both Apple and Google have made the process cumbersome by adding extra steps and confusing settings, which may discourage users from downloading through these alternative means.
Apple’s Perspective
Apple has stated that it is complying with the new EU law by enabling alternative app stores, but also emphasized its ongoing commitment to protecting user privacy and security. Apple maintains that its policies are primarily in place to safeguard users, though Epic Games argues otherwise.
The Bigger Battle: Epic vs. Apple
The legal and competitive battle between Epic Games and Apple isn’t over yet. According to Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, Fortnite’s return to iPhones in the EU is just the beginning. He continues to criticize Apple for restricting Fortnite access in other regions, arguing that Apple’s policies stifle competition and allow the company to charge high commissions, up to 30% on in-app purchases.
Google, while charging similar commissions on its Play Store, does allow other app stores on Android devices. This has enabled Android users to access Fortnite through the Epic Games Store without too much hassle.
What About the UK?
For those in the UK eagerly waiting for Fortnite’s return, there’s a bit of a wait. Currently, UK iPhone users can’t download the game, but they can still play it through a browser. However, according to reports, Epic Games aims to bring Fortnite back to UK iPhones by late 2025, pending any further legal challenges.
A new competition law passed in the UK may open doors for alternative app stores, similar to what the EU has done. Tim Sweeney sees this as progress for both developers and consumers, pushing for more competition and choice in the app marketplace.
Looking Ahead
While the fight between Epic Games and tech giants Apple and Google continues, the recent developments in the EU are a significant step towards broader access to games like Fortnite. For now, European players can dive back into the action, while the rest of the world eagerly watches to see how this tech battle unfolds.
