Friday afternoon brought news of Beeper Mini on Android suddenly ceasing operations, followed by Apple’s confirmation today. The tech giant mentioned, ‘We took steps to safeguard our users by blocking methods that exploit false credentials to access iMessage

According to Apple’s statement to 9to5Mac, Beeper Mini’s tactics posed significant risks to user security and privacy. Beeper, previously known as ‘Beeper Cloud,’ initially routed iMessage through a Mac. However, the recent introduction of Beeper Mini, a new Android app that directly leverages iMessage, garnered attention. It connects straight to Apple’s service, skipping the step of logging into your Apple ID via a remote Mac or Beeper’s servers. The data is handled directly between your device and Apple, with no intermediary servers involved.

Apple pointed out the dangers, such as metadata exposure, potential spam, unwanted messages, and phishing threats. While Beeper aimed at providing iMessage for Android, Apple’s statement hints at the risk posed by other potentially malicious actors. Notably, Apple expressed uncertainty regarding the assurance that messages sent via Beeper are exclusively accessible to the intended sender and recipient, or whether they maintain end-to-end encryption.
